Sustainable livelihoods: Lessons from initiatives for empowering smallholders in the tobacco sector in Africa

This session will explore and discuss effective strategies for improving the livelihoods of smallholders engaged in the tobacco sector. Drawing on real-world projects and initiatives implemented by ECLT since 2003, the presentation will provide tangible takeaways for the audience to implement in their own contexts. The focus will be on promoting sustainability, diversification, and community development to ensure a more resilient and prosperous future for smallholder farmers. Key points to cover include:

· Synthesis of findings from independent ECLT baseline studies on root causes of child labour in tobacco growing in Africa

· Overview of initiatives to improve smallholder livelihoods, and impact of such initiatives on child labour in tobacco

· Critical success factors: what works and doesn't work, and why.

· The challenge of sustainability: key lessons from ECLT social return on investment (SROI) and tracer studies

Innocent Mugwagwa

Innocent earned his PhD from Wageningen University in the Netherlands, focusing on the drivers and effects of smallholder participation in modern agrifood chains. Innocent has over 15 years of development experience, the last 10 years of which were dedicated to working as the Finance Director for Save the Children Norway and Zimbabwe. Innocent joined the ECLT Foundation in September 2010 as Senior Programme Manager and, since October 2022, he holds the position of Executive Director
