Panel: Market expectations regarding tobacco leafSpeakerKoen MonkauFounder and ChairmanCavendish Lloyd GroupIt has always been my dream to run a family business. However not coming from a business family I had to start my own. The people working in Cavendish Lloyd are like family to me and some of them actually are! As in any family there are arguments sometimes but overall there is a sense of belonging. However the essential ingredient of both family and business alike is trust. Not any contract stipulating every possible aspect of a transaction can override the fact that all business revolves around trust. In order to gain and maintain that trust with our customers we work as a team sharing the same values. From being traditional tobacco traders we moved successfully into other segments of the industry; we are innovative in our cigarette marketing and we offer anything you see in a box of cigarettes. Our in house team has a full understanding and control of the whole supply chain and is based in various locations around the globe. Please check our website for a location near you. WHO FTCT COP 10 and what it means for African leaf tobacco industrySpeakerAbrie du PlessisTrade Law ConsultantAbrie du Plessis taught Law at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa before he joined a multinational company as an Intellectual Property Practitioner. As part of several subsequent roles within the Tobacco Industry he spent more than a decade tracking the development of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). While based in Brussels he also followed the initial development of the 2014 European Union (EU) Tobacco Products Directive. After retiring in 2013 he joined the South African Trade Law Centre (Tralac) as an Associate, with the focus on supporting African free trade initiatives. He still follows FCTC and EU developments and takes a special interest in the approach of the Convention and the EU towards novel and emerging tobacco and nicotine products, most of which did not exist when the final text of the Convention was agreed. Being based in South Africa, he has also witnessed the increase in illicit trade in that country, at a time when the FCTC Protocol on Illicit Trade appears to be in a state of inertia. |
