The tobacco industry has used Cellulose Acetate as the material of choice for cigarette filters for the past 70 years so why should the industry consider alternative materials? Regulatory changes are at the heart of the reason why cigarette producers are now developing filters using sustainable and plastic-free raw materials. The European Single Use Plastic Directive has been the impetus for producers to consider change together with the costs for disposal and clean up soon to fall on cigarette producers. This talk will explore the Regulatory backdrop and the emerging availability of new materials which can replace Acetate. It will look at their advantages and disadvantages, the challenges that need to be overcome and highlight successful roll-outs of new filters which are sustainable and plastic-free. We will also discuss the necessary co-operation between raw material producers such as McAirlaid’s, machine manufacturers and the cigarette producers. |
McAirlaids Vliesstoffe GmbH
I have been engaged in the Airlaid Industry since 1986 when I joined the airlaid division of Finnish paper company Rauma Repola as Sales Director. Two colleagues went on to found McAirlaid’s in 1997 and I was recruited in 2004. Since then I spent 10 years building our US business in Virginia until moving back to Europe in 2017 where I now take care of strategic commercial initiatives such as cigarette filters and our Global Key Accounts.
